  1. Instrument used in aircraft that measures
  2. altitude, or height above sea level. The
  3. common type is a form of aneroid barometer,
  4. which works by sensing the differences in air
  5. pressure at different altitudes. This must
  6. continually be recalibrated because of the
  7. change in air pressure with changing weather
  8. conditions. The radar altimeter measures the
  9. height of the aircraft above the ground,
  10. measuring the time it takes for radio pulses
  11. emitted by the aircraft to be reflected.
